Popping or Clicking in Your Jaw?

A click with every bite, a pop when you yawn, soreness by the ear in the morning. Here's what your jaw is trying to tell you, and how we help at our North Phoenix clinic.

What you're feeling

You hear it more than anyone else does: a click or pop near your ear when you chew, yawn, or open wide. Maybe your jaw drifts to one side as it opens, or catches briefly before it lets go. Mornings can bring a tired, tight ache in the cheeks and temples, a hint you've been clenching overnight. Some people also notice ear fullness, or headaches that seem to start at the jaw.

What it usually means

These are the signatures of TMJ dysfunction: trouble in the temporomandibular joint, the hinge just in front of each ear. A small cartilage disc glides inside that joint every time your mouth moves; when muscle tension, clenching, or joint misalignment disturbs its glide, the disc slips and snaps back. That's your click. The jaw rarely acts alone: it hangs from a head balanced on the neck, and forward-head posture quietly changes jaw mechanics and keeps the surrounding muscles overworked. Occasional painless clicking can be harmless; clicking with pain, catching, or limited opening deserves attention.

When it's urgent

Seek emergency care if:

  • Your jaw locks fully open or fully closed
  • You've had significant trauma to the jaw or face
  • You have facial swelling with fever
  • Jaw or facial pain comes with chest pressure, shortness of breath, or sweating (call 911, as this can signal a heart attack)

How SpinalWorks evaluates it

Dr. Steve Van Laecken DC examines how your jaw actually moves (opening path, muscle tenderness, joint sounds) and just as carefully examines your upper neck and posture, because the two are mechanically linked. Weight-bearing X-rays of the cervical spine, taken when clinically necessary, show whether head and neck alignment is feeding the problem. If your case needs a dentist's involvement, such as a night guard for clenching, we'll coordinate rather than compete.

What care looks like

Care is gentle and specific: measured work on the jaw joint and the muscles that drive it, precise chiropractic adjustments for the upper neck, and posture habits that take standing strain off the whole system. Results vary from person to person. If your jaw has been announcing every meal, book a $79 new patient visit or call (602) 298-1600. We're on 7th Street in Moon Valley, North Phoenix.

Common Questions

Jaw clicking questions, answered

Is a clicking jaw always TMJ dysfunction?

A painless, occasional click can be normal joint noise. Clicking that comes with pain, catching, limited opening, morning soreness, or headaches suggests the joint's disc and muscles are not working together properly (the pattern of TMJ dysfunction) and is worth an evaluation.

What does my neck have to do with my jaw?

A great deal. The jaw hangs from a head that is balanced on the neck, and forward-head posture changes jaw mechanics and muscle tension. Many jaw patients also have upper-neck restriction, which is why we examine both rather than treating the jaw in isolation.

How does chiropractic care help TMJ pain?

Care may include gentle, specific work on the jaw joint and its muscles, adjustments to the upper neck, and posture guidance, often alongside your dentist's care. The goal is smoother joint mechanics and less muscle strain. Results vary from person to person.

When is jaw pain an emergency?

Go to the ER if your jaw locks fully open or closed, after significant facial trauma, or if you have facial swelling with fever. Jaw or facial pain with chest pressure, shortness of breath, or sweating can signal a heart attack: call 911 immediately.
