Gonstead Chiropractic Method
The SpinalWorks Chiropractic Approach

The Three Core Areas We Focus On to Restore Function

At SpinalWorks Chiropractic, we focus on correcting the root cause—not just the symptoms.

By addressing spinal alignment, posture, and movement together, we restore proper function and support lasting results, helping patients move better, feel better, and stay healthy.

Pillar #1

Segment

The primary role of a chiropractor is to identify and correct spinal misalignments, commonly referred to as subluxations, that can interfere with proper nerve function.

Dr. Steve VanLaecken, D.C utilizes a precise and systematic approach to locating and correcting these misalignments. His method focuses on accuracy and specificity, allowing chiropractors to address spinal issues effectively—often helping patients find relief when other medical or chiropractic approaches have fallen short.

Gonstead Chiropractic Method

A thorough chiropractic evaluation requires the ability to clearly see and assess the surface of the spine. As you can imagine, this would be nearly impossible through layers of clothing—much like asking a foot specialist to evaluate your foot while you’re still wearing your shoes.

For this reason, clinics that follow a precise, Gonstead-style approach are designed to allow for a “skin-to-skin” examination. Patients are provided with a comfortable, customized gown that opens in the back, enabling the doctor to properly observe spinal alignment, posture, and structural changes. Please note that you will not be required to change your clothing to a gown on every visit. Dressing comfortably is all that is really required on your continued visits.

The second key difference in this technique lies in how the adjustment is performed.

Rather than using a generalized spinal “manipulation,” this approach focuses on a specific, segment-by-segment adjustment. Each correction is carefully delivered to the exact area of the spine that requires attention—nothing more, nothing less.

Visualization

Gonstead Chiropractic Method

This step focuses on evaluating a patient’s posture and closely observing any changes in the skin, muscle tone, or natural contour of the spine.

Static Palpation

Gonstead Method

This step involves manually feeling the tissues surrounding the spine to assess areas of concern. Through palpation, the doctor can detect swelling, changes in muscle tone, and other subtle indicators that help identify exactly where a problem may exist.

Motion Palpation

This step involves assessing the spine while the patient moves or bends, allowing the doctor to evaluate how freely each spinal segment moves in different directions. Areas that move too little—or too much—can indicate dysfunction and help pinpoint where focused care may be needed.

X-Ray Analysis

CBP chiropractor in Phoenix

We offer static weight-bearing X-ray imaging. We want to see how your spine stacks up while you are standing.

Static X-rays provide detailed, still images that allow us to evaluate the structure, positioning, and alignment of bones and joints. This type of imaging is especially useful for identifying misalignments or structural abnormalities while the body is at rest.

Our specific X-ray imaging allows Dr. VanLaecken to gain a more complete picture of your condition and create a precise, personalized care plan tailored to your specific needs.

While there are thousands of chiropractors worldwide who utilize elements of the Gonstead approach, fewer than 5% of practitioners within the chiropractic profession fully practice the complete Gonstead System.

A true Gonstead approach means the doctor consistently follows every step of the examination and analysis process outlined above—without shortcuts.

This thorough spinal analysis is performed at every visit. As the doctor becomes more familiar with a patient’s spine and patterns of movement, the entire process can often be completed in less than a minute, without sacrificing accuracy or precision.

Pillar #2

Posture

CBP® Corrective Care is one of the most extensively researched and evidence-based methods of spinal correction in the chiropractic profession.

Corrective care chiropractor in Phoenix

After years of clinical practice focused on precise spinal adjusting, Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP) emerged as a powerful addition to chiropractic care. Although not traditionally taught in most chiropractic programs, CBP has continued to evolve and expand over the past four decades into a highly researched corrective system.

By integrating CBP principles into care, it became possible to address complex cases and achieve longer-lasting correction—results that spinal adjustments alone may not always accomplish.

While skilled hands are essential for detecting and correcting spinal misalignments, CBP provides an important missing piece by combining precise, evidence-based corrective techniques designed to restore proper spinal structure and alignment.

In a true CBP® Corrective Care practice, X-rays are taken at the start of care to accurately measure spinal alignment and determine whether the spine falls within normal limits compared to an ideal model.

If a patient is a candidate for CBP Corrective Care, a customized treatment plan is created. Throughout care, follow-up X-rays may be taken at specific intervals to objectively track progress and measure structural improvements over time.

Adjustments not 'holding'?

Corrective exercises are used to restore the spine and posture to a more neutral, healthy position. We often describe postural correction as the “glue” that helps hold chiropractic adjustments in place.

When patients experience only short-term relief, it is often due to underlying postural issues that have never been properly addressed. By focusing on correcting the root cause—not just the symptoms—we help create more lasting, meaningful results.

Pillar #3

Movement

Functional movement is the body’s ability to move naturally, efficiently, and without pain. Everyday actions—like bending, lifting, or standing—require the right balance of mobility, stability, and coordination between joints and muscles.

When movement patterns become dysfunctional, the body compensates, increasing stress on joints and tissues and raising the risk of pain or injury over time.

At Spinal Works, our Functional Movement Assessment takes less than 10 minutes and helps identify movement imbalances that may be contributing to discomfort. From there, we create targeted corrective strategies to restore proper movement and support long-term, pain-free function.
